One sentence summaries of Genesis to 2 Samuel, chapter-by-chapter.
For my course on the Old Testament, my professor charged us with writing one sentence that summarizes the main point of each chapter. So if you’re needing a quick refresh of your Old Testament knowledge, here’s some light-ish reading.
Genesis:
God creates everything from His Word; what He sees and speaks is very good.
God rests and elaborates his creation through habitation, gender, and marriage.
We are exiled through sin. God asks, “Where are you?”
Cain and Abel continue the curse, people die, they call to God.

Lives shortened, God restarts with the Noahic covenant
The ark fills, the earth empties.
The floods end, Noah is commissioned to begin anew.
A rainbow stretches across the sky, be fruitful and multiply.

Abraham pathologically lies because his wife is beautiful, God has his back.

Abraham is notably a prince of God, he buries his wife.
Isaac receives a wife, Rebekah, from Abraham’s land.
Jacob and Esau are born, two nations prophesied to struggle.

God meets Jacob as he seeks a wife, he calls this place Bethel.
Jacob works to receive a wife. Rachel is loved, but Leah bears children.
The sons of Jacob are complete, they return to his land with blessing.
Jacob flees in secret, Laban pursues them, but they come to an agreement.
Jacob is delivered from Esau, and wrestles with God, he is named Israel.
Esau and Jacob embrace a sweet reunion.
Simeon and Levi plunder the city after their sister was defiled.
Jacob is named Israel, God ushers a powerful word, Isaac and Rebekah die.
Esau leaves, bears many children, and a lineage begins.
Joseph is loved and has dreams, his brothers conspire against him and sell him.
Judah’s family acts immorally, he conceived twins with his daughter-in-law, Tamar.
Joseph is successful through God, he resists sin. Potiphar’s wife bears a false witness and Joseph is thrown in prison.
Joseph continues to express God’s power by interpreting dreams in prison.
Joseph interprets Pharaoh's dreams and God grants him influence, he rises to power in Egyptian authority, there is a famine in the land.
Joseph’s brothers do not recognize him, but Joseph acts with grace and requests Benjamin’s presence.
Joseph prepares a feast for his brothers, and is compassionate at the sight of Benjamin.
Joseph tests and threatens to make Benjamin his slave.
Joseph reveals his identity to his brothers, they are blessed, and Jacob is revived by this news.
The family of Israel travels to Egypt and becomes a family of shepherds.
Tact and wisdom from Joseph saves Egypt from a famine.
Joseph receives the blessing of Israel at the end of his life.
Israel blessed each of his sons, the tribes of Israel uniquely and died.
Before Joseph’s death, he forgives. What they meant for evil, God meant for good.
Exodus:
Midwives preserve the Hebrew lineage as the king attempts to kill the people.
Moses is born, the Egyptians unknowingly raise him to become their king.
Moses meets I AM through the burning bush.
Moses’ objections are met with God's power.
The King resists the plea to free the people, and they are treated worse in turn.
God continues to lead Moses through fear and opposition and commands their leadership.
God works wonders through Moses, the plagues begin with blood, and no magicians can replicate.
The plagues continue with frogs, gnats, and flies. Pharaoh agrees to let them go.
Animals die, boils grow, and hail reigns down, Pharaoh is hardened still, as God said.
Locusts swarm and God made Pharaoh stubborn.
The final plague, the death of the firstborns.
An animal sacrifice is prescribed to the Israelites and the Passover tradition begins. Specific instructions are followed and God sets the Israelites free.

Moses lifts his praises to God, dedicates the community to Him, and receives provision.

God is filled with steadfast love and faithfulness to these people. He meets with Moses, restores the tablets, and comes back shining.

Leviticus:

Moses sings his final song.
Moses ushers a final blessing on the nations of Israel.
Joshua is full of wisdom, and Moses, the man whom God knew face to face, dies.
Joshua
Only be strong and courageous, Israel! Joshua begins his great leadership with encouragement.
The spies are spared and assisted by Rahab.
The Lord was with Moses, and he will be with Joshua – on dry ground in the Jordan river.
The Israelites built a memorial of twelve stones.
The new generation is dedicated to the Lord.

Gideon seeks to help the Lord in His work to save Israel, God works through Gideon.
God reduces Gideon’s army to prove His glory, they receive victory.
Gideon falls into sin of many kinds, including creating his own ephod.
Gideon’s son rises and falls in leadership.
The people cry out to God, He urges them to call to the God they have chosen to worship.
Jephthah is commissioned by the people, but not God–yet, the spirit of God was on him.
Ephraim is defeated in internal conflict, three more judges are appointed.
An angel appears and tells of the birth of Samson to his mother.
Samson exercises strength through the Spirit of God.
The philistines kill Samson’s wife, he retaliates.
Samson is tricked, and his final act is to kill the philistines who captured him.
Micah is born and recruits a Levite priest.
The Danites seek an inheritance and take what isn’t theirs, unjustly.
Evil is deep in the hearts of the people, seen in severe mistreatment of women.
The Lord defeated Benjamin but spared 600 men.
Wives are supplied to the tribe, and they begin anew, doing what is right in their own eyes.
Ruth
Amidst being widowed, Ruth remains loyal–they return to their land.
Ruth finds favor with God and Boas, he ensures her safety and provision.
Ruth lays at Boaz’s feet and asks for redemption through marriage.
Ruth and Boaz marry, and give birth to King David’s grandfather.
1 Samuel
The Lord opens Hannah’s womb and brings Samuel, a man given to the Lord
Hannah worships God, Eli is rejected by God.
Samuel is established as a prophet of God.
The ark of the covenant has been captured.
The ark continues to bring wrath upon the people who have it.
The philistines return the ark back to the Israelites.
Samuel instructs them to put away foreign Gods.
The Lord answers their cry for a king.
Samuel and Saul share a meal.
Saul is anointed and the Spirit of God rushes upon him.
“For today, the Lord has worked salvation in Israel”
Samuel leaves with a message about obedience to God.
Saul breaks God’s command.
“For nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few.”
Saul continues to turn from God, Samuel mourns this, the Lord regrets this.
David is anointed to be King, God’s Spirit departs from Saul.
“You come at me with sword and spear, but I come in the name of the Lord of Hosts…”
David and Johnathan grow close, Saul grows jealous, the Lord is with David.
A harmful spirit leads Saul to try and kill David.
Johnathan bids David farewell as he flees to safety.
David flees to the temple and gathers Goliath’s sword before he flees.
The priests are killed as they are associated with David’s hiding.
David remains safe in the wilderness, living in Engedi.
The Lord delivers Saul into David’s hands and he shows great mercy.
Abigail prevents David from acting against Nabal and becomes his wife.
David continues to refuse to put his hand against God’s anointed.
David flees to Gath, weary of his livelihood.
Saul confronts a medium and brings Samuel where he is confronted about his fate.
David continues to grow in trust and integrity in the wake of his rejection.
David strengthens himself in the Lord, his family is taken, but God restores everything.
Saul dies and his armor is taken by the Philistines.
2 Samuel
David laments the death of Saul and Johnathan.
David becomes king of Judah, they engage with Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son, in battle.
Saul’s kingdom grows weak, Abner attempts to trick David.
Ish-bosheth is killed after Abner is.
In the wake of this defeat, David becomes king of Israel and experiences victory.
The ark is restored, this time it is blessed, and David worships in the presence of it.
The Davidic covenant promises that the Lord will establish an eternal Kingdom through his lineage.
“And the Lord gave David victories wherever he went…”
David welcomes Johnathan’s son, shows incredible kindness.
David brings peace to Israel through battle victory, preceded by honest dealings.
David commits adultery and murder.
David faces Nathan and prophecies that his child would die.
Absalom hates Amnon for the evil he has done, he murders him and flees.
David forgives Absalom but will not welcome him in.
David flees Jerusalem once again as Absalom attempts to take the throne.
David is weary on the road, Absalom seizes Jerusalem.
David escapes and finds temporary safety.
David attempts to spare Absalom, but he is killed, David mourns his death.
Grief overcomes David and he begins his journey home to Jerusalem.
Sheba sows disunity in the kingdom, but is killed.
David continues to conquer many armies in battle.
David’s Psalm 18 is written here, a song of deliverance.
David reminisces on God’s Spirit and appreciation is offered for his mighty men.
Repentant of his sin, David offers a sacrifice to God that Israel would not suffer for it.
